Pastry Chef Josef Keller claims to have invented the recipe in 1915; however, it is a known fact that the recipe actually did not appear in print until 1930. Therefore, there is a suggestion that Black Forest cake may have been made as far back as the 16th century.

Today, the improved version of Black Forest cake tends to omit the kirsch and replace it with fruit syrup made from cherries or berries so that the cake is a little more light and refreshing. A typical Black Forest cake contains at least three to four layers of chocolate sponge cake with whipped cream and cherries in between. It is also frosted with whipped cream and further decorated with chocolate shavings and maraschino cherries on top.
